RESEARCH PROJECT

This project involved students from SUU in a study about the effects that algebra has on critical thinking skills. The results of the research are available to everyone and will be presented in public forums. The original purpose of this research was to show the benefits of higher level mathematics, but as shown in the formal research paper, the results deviated from what was originally planned.  The research will be used to raise awareness to all people, regardless of whether or not they are students, and will hopefully make a positive impact on the community and possibly the state.

The goal of this project was to produce a small and concise research paper showing clear results to answer the question of whether or not algebra affects critical thinking skills in students. The results of the research will be presented in events like the Research Symposium and the Festival of Excellence to show students that mathematics can be beneficial to their education.

Goal

Objectives

The objectives of my project are to show students that algebra should be taken in high school and college as a base for education and critical thinking. I want to raise student awareness that algebra does have an important role in educational and logical development.

The Effects of Algebra on Critical Thinking

Overview

The research was done by using in-class written surveys and face to face interviews with students who volunteer to participate. I created the questions that were used in the interviews and also personally conducted them. The survey questions were taken from critical thinking book problems. The anonymity of the students was never compromised, as the data is the most important aspect of the research. It was done during the fall 2016 and spring 2017 semesters, and was finished after about one year. In order to make sure the information was accurate, I received help from one of the math professors at SUU.
